International Travel Tips at a Glance

You’re not in Kansas anymore, and everywhere you turn, things are different. On your trip overseas, have no expectations, and you will have no disappointments. Even basic things may differ greatly, such as toilets—and they may seem strange to you. A Southeast Asian “squat toilet” is a little confusing at first until someone finally takes you aside and explains how to use it.

What to carry with you

On the subject of toilets, depending on your destination, toilet paper may not be available in the public toilets, so carry a pocket-sized packet of tissue with you wherever you go. And while you’re at it, always carry some coins, because they may charge you to get in. Carry a photocopy of your passport with you for safety, with the real thing locked in your hotel safe. It’s also a good idea to carry a card or brochure from your hotel, which has the address written in the local language, in case you get lost and need a taxi to take you back.

Learn the customs and cultures

You’ll find that you are generally welcome anywhere so long as you act appropriately, and don’t disrespect the local culture. Learn what’s what before you go. Don’t touch the Buddha images in Asia, and wherever you are, it’s always a good idea to ask if photography is allowed before snapping pictures. Learn the appropriate greeting—many cultures don’t shake hands or touch, instead, learn how to “wai” in Thailand, “Namaste” in India, or bow in Japan. In some parts of Europe though, greetings may involve cheek-kissing or hand-kissing

Getting around locally

Renting a car may sound like a good idea, but if you’re unfamiliar with the local laws and driving practices, you’re better off taking public transportation. Public transportation may be widely available, in London for example, the “tube” is a fast and easy way to get just about anywhere. Taxis in Europe may be far more costly than you’re used to in the US, and in any country, be aware that not all taxi cabs are regulated. Make sure there is a meter in the taxi. From the airport, take a taxi from the airport taxi stand and avoid “rogue” taxi drivers that approach you independently.

What’s to eat?

If you look hard enough, you’ll probably be able to find a restaurant to feed you steak and potatoes, but give the local cuisine a try. You will impress the locals if you can enjoy a fiery hot “som tam”(papaya salad) in Thailand, or czarnina (duck blood soup) in Poland.

What’s to drink?

It’s always a better bet to stick with bottled water and drinks. Traditions involving alcohol may also differ. Don’t expect a beer in Saudi Arabia, but expect plenty of it in Scotland; and expect to participate in friendly toasts involving many consecutive shots of vodka in Eastern Europe.
